Greetings from the Pastor:
Back in the 70's, there was a kid from California who frequently made the trek north from the newly
renamed "SPU" to sneak into a worship service near Green Lake. The pastor was a master
communicator; the church a community with a reputation for truth and grace, inclusion and challenge.
One Sunday, he heard the pastor read from his journal as he'd just returned from India, and for years to
come the young man would tell people it was the best sermon he'd ever heard.
In 1993 he told the story to a pastor in India, with whom the young man stayed while teaching there. The
pastor smiled at the man from Washington and said, "That pastor from Seattle stayed with me while he
was here in India."
Thus began the young man's reconnection with Bethany Community Church. And in the providence of
God, he would return to Bethany as her Senior Pastor, 16 years after graduating from SPU and leaving
Seattle.
I am that man; no longer young, but not yet old. I'm thrilled to play a role in Bethany's story and I'm
honored to invite you to join us in the chapter God is presently writing. It's still a story of grace and
truth; inclusion and challenge. Sunday after Sunday, the overflowing sanctuary is filled with university
students, and I can't help but wonder, which one will replace me in God's timing?
Will you join us in building a new sanctuary across the street from the Bethany that was once your church
home? Your gift honors the Lord, those who met Jesus here in years past and those who will come to
know Him in the decades ahead.
In His Service,
Richard Dahlstrom, Senior Pastor
Greetings from Pastor John:
I could not be happier the way the Lord is leading Bethany. I know you will give
serious and prayerful consideration to this appeal. I certainly am excited about
the on going ministry taking place under the very capable and Christ-centered
teaching of Richard. I know he has a great group of leaders working alongside, for
which I am glad.
Sincerely,
John H. McCullough
P.J. No longer young, getting older!
