The challenge and opportunity that is before us is large! We believe, however, that as each person who calls Bethany home prayerfully seeks ways to give "over and above" their current level of contribution to the church, that God will do amazing things, both in the lives of individuals and in our life together. The true practice of Biblical stewardship is not limited to what we might be able to give from a bank account. The narratives of giving in the Bible reveal that God is honored when we bring gifts from the height and breadth of our resources.
People are being very creative as they pray about these things and seek to give for this 3 year period:
Some are shifting their budgets, by eating out less, or changing their entertainment options (less lattes, or movies, or concerts). Some may postpone major expenses, waiting until later to buy a new car or take an expensive vacation. Others may be led to channel giving that is presently going to other charities, towards Bethany, keeping in mind that this is for a limited period, as a means of investing in our future together.
Unexpected cash, which comes in the form of a tax return, or an inheritance, or a gift may be devoted to this project. Some people choose to give their bonuses, or their raises, or their dividends, or rental income to this project. Others will draw out some savings as part of their contribution, or give income from a 2nd job, or other extra earnings.
Then there are gifts of stock or mutual funds and real-estate which, if given to the church directly, offer some fine tax advantages. Personal property, such as automobiles, jewelry, and other items may also be given. While there may be no capital gains tax benefits on these items, but the financial and spiritual benefits can be tremendous.
The decisions we make as we think about these things will affect the future of Bethany for many generations. For that reason, our prayer is that every family, every person, will pray over these matters and contribute sacrificially, knowing that we are investing in God's kingdom purposes. The results will be visible in each of our personal lives, as we are blessed for our generosity, and in our life together, as ministries expand!
"I will not offer to God that which costs me nothing."
I Chronicles 21:24
Note: Secure legal and tax counsel prior to giving stock or property to the church. Also, check with church leadership prior to giving any personal property to make sure that the church can accept the property.
